Compton, Prewett, Thomas & Hickey, LLP, was founded in 1921 at the height of the El Dorado oil boom by Walter L. Brown. He was joined in the 1950s by renowned trial attorney Robert C. Compton and by William I. Prewett shortly thereafter.
As the community has evolved, so has the firm, growing and changing to meet the business and personal legal needs of large and small companies. While the founding partners are no longer with the firm, the principles on which they practiced are engrained in each of our attorneys. We are dedicated to achieving client priorities in a professional and cost-effective manner while adhering to high standards.
The firm is comprised of four seasoned attorneys: Floyd M. Thomas Jr., a senior litigation practitioner with more than 32 years in trial experience; Joseph Hickey, LL.M., with 25 years of tax law knowledge; Matthew J. Shepherd, a general litigation practitioner who is also the firms leader in banking law; and F. Mattison Thomas III, a general litigation practitioner who also concentrates on oil, gas and environmental law.
The firm represents most large businesses, school districts and municipalities in South Arkansas. From Little Rock south to Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi, oil refineries, chemical plants, banks, paper mills, fertilizer plants, waste disposal companies and government entities rely on our firm’s legal expertise. We have particular experience in business litigation, insurance defense, banking law and oil and gas law.
When our corporate clients find themselves in need of personal legal services, we can help there, too. We deftly handle a wide range of non-business legal matters, including estate planning, personal injury, divorce, and criminal defense.
